Technology and human psychology

After another distraction formed by a notification from Substack, I have turned the notifications off. I love Substack with a passion. It has been my salvation during all these months when I have felt the need to close this site.

However, like all the ‘apps’, when they intrude into our worlds and ‘distract us’ from our purpose, or even just open up our worlds to things we are not ready to see, I think they are not great for our psychological health.

If we don’t have our health, we are not going to have the strength to do good in this world. It is important I think. Sarah Wilson says that writing about our biomes and sugar is frivolous in the world that we live in. I agree that we need to be focusing our attention and efforts on things that are going to move the needle in a world where the music is slowing down, but I think that health is actually quite important, collectively.

To put effort into the health of populations is to care for people, and that kindness is what is so badly needed in some of the darkest corners of our world right now.

My tummy is in knots because of all the things I have seen on social media tonight. I admit that I opened my phone and the algorithm delivered these things to me. But, as I mentioned in my previous posts, we humans are not psychologically equipped to deal with the random eruption of pure chaos in our worlds.

If I keep writing this evening, perhaps I will be able to relax enough to sleep. I am not really sure what else to do when technology has reached into my world and given me a lot more than I bargained for!!
